What's the Story?

October has been amazing and it has only just begun! The weather is perfect! (Can we talk about all the trees and colors?) Here is a new drawing I did just the other week:

I don't always tell the stories behind my personal pieces, sometimes it's fun to know them and sometimes, as a viewer, it is fun to make up your own. This piece is a more self explanatory one, but it does have a story. I made this for Tim Levan Miller. I wanted to make an image with text, something I love to do and do often. I also wanted to incorporate tree elements to satisfy my current tree drawing obsession. Strong line work was used to demonstrate movement as well as emotion. I didn't show the picture to Tim when it was finished, deciding what to do with it. A week later Tim and I went on a hike in Valley Forge. During the hike Tim proposed among the trees! I showed him the drawing later, liking the irony. The story behind an artist's work may surprise you, or may even enlighten additional inspiration for future pieces. I personally love knowing the meaning behind an artist's song lyrics or a photographer's inspiration for a shoot. As an artist, how do you decide which stories are necessary to share with your art?

"The Birds" Etsy Treasury

I saw, "The Birds," for the first time one summer on TV when I was probably 8 years old. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Tippi Hedren running in heels and green mod suit while saving children from the mad flock of black birds? Awesome. Watching it now I still think it's great. You can see the fishline hanging off of some of the birds and the special effects are no CGI but that's part of what I love about it. It also doesn't take away from the amazing art direction and styling that always comes with a Hitchcock movie. Inspired by the film and nostalgia I created "The Birds," treasury for Etsy. Enjoy!

Monoprints and New Work

I've been making some new portfolio pieces, mostly using traditional printmaking techniques.The above piece is a monoprint. Monoprint I feel allows me to show my whole process of art making. It isn't very forgiving and any mistake you make can be shown in the final print which I think makes the image even more textured and rich.

Dia de los Muertos Piece

Hello it's been awhile, I have been busy experimenting with new techniques, redesigning my website, and finishing work for upcoming shows! Above is the piece I made for The Autumn Society's "Dia de los Muertos" show that I am in. In college I took a Mexican Art History class and out of all we learned about I always really enjoyed the woodcuts. My concept for the piece was the whole hear no evil, speak no evil but I wanted it to have the feel of the woodcuts I remembered. The texture in the background was a separate block that is supposed to represent marigolds the traditional flower of the day of the dead. Looking forward to the show!

This is my piece, ET:

I really didn't like the movie ET when I was younger, the part with him weezing while running through the woods really freaked me out. I did however have a lot of fun drawing him, especially his face and metallic, glowing heart. I used very little collage elements (only the heart) but am starting to overlap and collage materials instead. I used ink, faber castel pen, and acrylic on this piece.I'm really excited about this show, if you're in the area check it out!

Here's some new work, I think I'm finally able to bring out my work in my sketchbook to my professional work which is exciting. I have still been experimenting with collage and do pieces with those elements but I am really enjoying these paintings/drawings right now.
